Days 52 & 53 (I rode 105 miles in one day!)

Days 52 & 53 - Oct. 25th and 26th I had a great ride on Saturday from Lebeau to Jackson LA.  These are both small towns on rural roads that you probably cannot find on most maps.  As you have noticed my riding is mostly on rural roads which are picked because of lack of traffic and they usually are the scenic routes.  They are often not straight routes from A to B but instead wind around.  That is why my trip is probably 20% to 25% longer then if I drove in a car.  When I started to ride the temperature was about 46 degrees and rose to a high of 72 for the day.  There was frost on the ground and I could see my breath in the chilly air.  I rode most of the day with the Mississippi River to my left.  The river basically winds its way down finally draining into the Gulf Coast.  When up close to the river you can see why they call it the Mighty Mississippi.  It seems to flow in all directions in the particular area and can understand where there are so many dikes, dams, floodgates etc.. as the river would takeover otherwise.  Also in this area I have seen some of the largest and most beautiful Oak Trees.  Just like the pictures in books, these large Oak's are covered in Spanish Moss.  I also saw a couple picturesque plantation type mansions that were usually back off the main road.

I have been wanting to ride a 100 mile day and today I did 105 miles!!  That is a really, really good day for me as the roads were good, there was no wind and the temperature was perfect.  Maybe I am finally learning how to ride after practicing on the first 2340 miles I have already done!  I also got lost once or twice which added to my mileage.  In addition, Barbara's cell phone stopped working and she was 40 miles ahead of me and could not locate me.  But as resourceful as she was, she flagged down a police officer in St. Francisville who in turned called me for Barbara and then met up with me at the ferry landing I had to take to cross the Mississippi River.  Thank you Officer Louie Calvert!  Then later that evening I got lost in Baton Rouge as the LSU vs. Georgia football game had ended.  We had a terrible time finding a place to stay as all the rooms were booked out.  And.....let me tell you LSU football is a big deal down here!  So after getting lost in that confusion I found another Police Officer, Willie Collins of the Baton Rouge PD and he steered us in the right direction.  See pictures below of my new Police friends.

Last, we ended up eating at Wendy's this evening and and were given a donation by a family on the spot!!  Thank you for your support.  Also on today's ride I met yet another rider going in the opposite direction to California.  After trading stories he asked "How can I donate?"  I want to take all of those again that have donated.  We have raised $57,000 of the $71,000 goal and am only 800 miles away from my destination.  Again....please forward this website to anyone that might have an interest or would like to buy some wine!!
